What is Tea Resin?
A resin is what remains when tea is asked to give up everything but its essence. Time, slowed and compressed, into a form you can hold in your palm.
The Form
Tea resin — known in Chinese as chá gāo (茶膏) — is the concentrated essence of finished tea, drawn out at low temperature and crystallized into a small, dense object. We call it a resin rather than a paste because that is what it behaves like: solid at rest, soluble on contact with water, holding its aroma the way amber holds light.
One hundred kilograms of leaf yields ten to twenty kilograms of resin. Everything else — the fiber, the water, the redundancy — is left behind. What you receive is the leaf's answer to the question of what cannot be reduced further.
A Brief History
The earliest forms of tea concentrate appear in the Tang Dynasty (618–907), when monks and physicians began reducing tea by long, careful heat. By the Song Dynasty (960–1279) the practice had been refined enough that resin was offered as imperial tribute. In the Qing court it became a closely held court craft — the world's first instant tea, four centuries before anyone used that phrase.
The names Pu'er and chá gāo were both fixed during the Qing. The lineage we draw from is older than that, but the vocabulary is borrowed.
Why Compression Matters
Ivy Hermit's resin line is part of what we call Space Tea — tea reduced to its smallest possible form. The other half of our practice, the cold brew bottle, expands tea outward into ready, shareable volume. The resin moves the other direction: inward.
How It's Made
Most resin on the market is made cheaply and quickly: boiled at high heat, sometimes thickened with carrageenan, and dried into something that looks the part. The shortcuts cost the tea its enzymes, its aromatics, and most of what made the leaf worth concentrating in the first place.
We work only with low-temperature extraction. The leaf is steeped, never boiled. The liquor is filtered through nano-membranes, concentrated under vacuum, and dried at temperatures that preserve the volatile compounds responsible for aroma. The whole process takes weeks. It is the most expensive method available, and it is the only one that produces a resin still recognizable as the tea it came from.
How to Drink It
The honest answer is that you almost cannot get this wrong. Drop a tablet in hot water and wait. That said, the form rewards small differences in approach.
The fastest path. Stir gently for ten seconds; the resin dissolves on contact. Best for solo drinking and tasting notes.
Bring to a near-simmer, then cut the heat and steep three minutes. The body deepens; a faint rice-soup texture emerges. Our preferred method in winter.
For the train, the studio, the long walk. Seal and forget. The brew is gentler and slightly sweeter than a fresh pour.
Drop into spring water and leave it alone for thirty minutes. The Still Ratio shows up most clearly here — calm without sedation, clarity without edge.
The Still Ratio
Cold and slow extraction preserves a 2:1 ratio of L-theanine to caffeine — roughly twice what you get from a hot, fast brew of the same leaf. We named this the Still Ratio because it describes the felt experience: alert, but quiet. Awake, but not pushed.
This is the throughline across every resin we make. The specific tea — Pu'er, oolong, white, or aged — supplies the character. The form supplies the stillness.
